GLP-1 is a Glucagon-like peptide-1 produced by the gut. It increases insulin production, a hormone that lowers blood sugar level while inhibiting glucagon secretion, which is a hormone that raises blood sugar, reduces appetite and energy intake while delaying gastric emptying. In June 2021, it was approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in obese individuals with a BMI ≥ 30 or overweight BMI ≥ 27 with at least one weight related comorbidity such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol, for use in addition to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.
